Upcycling textile into art

During this course, we will revive old furniture using textile scrap that emerges as industrial waste from Dutch weaving factories. By adding color and texture, we will explore the endless possibilities of adding more character to everyday objects and transforming them into vibrant art pieces. By wrapping and layering textile scrap around the surfaces, you will create soft, furry decorative textures while adding a vivid color palette. We begin with a small accessory in the first class, to become familiar with the material and basic techniques. After that, you will apply these skills to a bigger piece of furniture you bring yourself (e.g. stool, chair, lamp, small table). This method offers a unique and sustainable solution to products that are often overconsumed and discarded within short cycles.

Sewing machine experience is not required, guidance will be provided.

Materials
During the first lesson, the required materials will be explained in detail. For the second lesson, stools will be provided.
In later classes, students are required to bring second-hand furniture or objects. The selection can be discussed together during the course, depending on each student’s idea and the suitability for wrapping.
 

Course Schedule 

week 1  — Introduction & Bracelet Making
In the first session,Maori will introduce her practice using discarded materials and how it developed through hands on exploration.
Participants will learn where the materials come from and begin experimenting with them. We will then create a bracelet that can also be worn as a hair accessory.

week 2  — Basic Wrapping furniture Practice
We will begin by wrapping a simple stool as a practice exercise. You will see how different density, volume, and the use of one or two colors can change the overall impression. By completing one piece, you will gain a clear understanding of the process, helping you decide what kind of object or furniture piece to bring for your own project starting from Week 5. Stools will be provided.

week 3 & 4  —‍  ‍Making a Pochette
Create a small pochette by arranging and sewing your chosen fringe materials. Learn how to attach fringe to fabric to form a surface, along with the basics of bag making. No prior sewing experience is needed, and support will be provided throughout the process.

week 5  — Wrapping Furniture, Color Planning
We will start working on your own furniture piece, such as a chair, table, shelf, or lamp. Bring something from home or a second hand source, and we can discuss your ideas together. Fringe will be loosely arranged to try out color combinations. This process of adjusting and rethinking is often the most enjoyable part of the workshop!

week 6 & 7  —‍  Fixing, Surface Covers
After deciding on the colors, we will begin fixing the materials onto your furniture.
Trimming and making small adjustments to the fringe will help achieve a more refined finish. Flat surfaces, such as seats or shelves, will be covered with sewn textile panels.

week 8  —‍  Finishing
We will complete the pieces by brushing and refining the surface. If you finish early, you can create a small stole using the remaining materials.

Maak textielkunst van reststoffen en gebruikte meubels. In acht lessen werk je aan opvallende objecten vol kleur, textuur en karakter. De inspiratie voor je werk komt uit de Fringe Friends-collectie van je docent: de Japanse ontwerper Maori Kimura. Deze cursus wordt gegeven in het Engels.

Maori staat bekend om haar speelse manier van werken met textiel. Haar ontwerpen balanceren tussen functionaliteit en kunst en nodigen altijd uit om beter te kijken. Ze studeerde textielontwerp aan de Tama Art University in Tokio en werkte daarna zeven jaar als textiel- en tassendesigner bij ISSEY MIYAKE.

Je werkt in de cursus met textielrestmateriaal dat overblijft als industrieel afval bij Nederlandse weverijen. Door te wikkelen, te lagen en te combineren ontdek je hoe kleur en structuur een alledaags object compleet kunnen veranderen. Zachte, harige oppervlakken ontstaan vanzelf terwijl je werkt. Wat eerst een stoel of kruk was, groeit uit tot een levendig kunstobject met een eigen uitstraling.
We starten met een klein accessoire, zodat je rustig kunt kennismaken met het materiaal en de basistechnieken. Daarna pas je die kennis toe op een groter meubelstuk dat je zelf meebrengt, zoals een stoel, kruk, lamp of bijzettafel. Je onderzoekt wat er gebeurt als je loslaat, opbouwt en experimenteert.
Je hebt geen ervaring met een naaimachine nodig. Begeleiding krijg je stap voor stap. Je neemt zelf een klein meubelstuk mee.

Materiaal
Tijdens de eerste les krijg je een uitgebreide toelichting op de benodigde materialen. Voor de tweede les zorgen wij voor krukken.
In de lessen daarna neem je zelf een tweedehands meubelstuk of object mee. Welke keuze je maakt, kun je tijdens de cursus samen afstemmen, afhankelijk van je idee en of het geschikt is om te omwikkelen.
